The Cambridge campus of Anglia Ruskin University is undergoing a major redevelopment to create state-of-the-art teaching, lecture theatre, library and performance facilities. As part of the redevelopment work, one building housing classrooms and the University Eye Clinic had to be demolished. Suitable high-quality decant accommodation was needed to house these facilities for three years until the new buildings were completed.Solution :
John Ryan, Minor Works Co-ordinator in the University's Estates and Facilities Services, says: "We approached a number of leading modular building suppliers on the Buying Solutions framework and eventually chose Portakabin."
Because Portakabin is a pre-approved Buying Solutions accredited supplier, the whole procurement process was greatly accelerated. Public-sector organisations, like Anglia Ruskin University, can significantly shorten their usual lengthy tender processes by choosing a supplier from the Buying Solutions approved list.
Anglia Ruskin had very specific requirements for its classroom and University Eye Clinic buildings. Quality was especially important for the eye clinic, since it needed to house sensitive equipment and would be used by the public for eye tests and treatments. The floors had to be particularly stable, and the many small consulting rooms had to be made to very specific dimensions for the eye tests.
Portakabin created a purpose-built two-storey building for the University Eye Clinic constructed from the premium-quality Ultima building modules. The same thermally efficient, robust modules were also used for the two-storey classroom block.
John continues: "The University arranged the necessary service connections, then Portakabin provided a turn-key solution for these two buildings, from the groundworks and site preparation through to air-conditioning systems, security alarms, DDA access ramps, fencing and pathways. It made the job much simpler for us to manage because we only had one supplier to deal with. We had great support on site and our project manager at Portakabin was brilliant - nothing was too much trouble for him, including amendments to the specialist University Eye Clinic areas, which helped the whole project run smoothly."
Portakabin had just 12 weeks to design and install the buildings, which both had to be fitted into very tight locations between other campus buildings. The University Eye Clinic building had to be manoeuvred into a courtyard surrounded by four-storey buildings.
John says: "There were just inches to spare on either side of the modules for the University Eye Clinic building as they were brought onto site. For the classroom building, a special access area had to be created so that crane could be brought in to lift the modules over the existing buildings. It all went without a hitch thanks to the expertise of the Portakabin teams on site."
Both buildings were installed and fully fitted out in time for the start of the new term, minimising any disruption to campus activities. On-time, on-budget deliveries like this are promised by the unique Portakabin Customer Charter. This charter even promises that if Portakabin ever fails to deliver on-time, the company will provide a week's free hire for every day it is late.*
John adds: "The users of the new buildings are pleased with the standard of decant accommodation provided."
In a customer satisfaction survey following the installation, Anglia Ruskin awarded Portakabin ten out of ten for every aspect of the project.
