Arla Foods is constructing the largest fresh milk dairy in the world in Aylesbury. In keeping with its ‘one’ team culture, the company was keen to house its own project and operations personnel in the same building as on-site engineering and construction contractors. The aim was to create a single team environment in which everyone was fully engaged in delivering this world-class facility.
Given the high profile of the project, Arla Foods was also keen to create a high-quality working environment and a visually attractive, professional looking building for this prestigious construction site.Solution :
Richard Jones, Project Manager at Arla Foods, says: “As part of our ‘Closer to Nature’ ethos, we wanted to find the most sustainable solution possible. A timely approach from Portakabin alerted us to the possibility of reusing an existing three-storey building located at the Olympic Park, which was due to be dismantled just before we would need the building in Aylesbury. The timing was perfect and the building met all of our quality requirements.”
Portakabin dismantled the building, module by module, and reconstructed it on the Arla site to create a two-storey, 2,575m2 facility. Reusing a building in this way is not only highly sustainable, it also reduces lead times and cost.
Portakabin was able to adapt the building to meet Arla’s specific requirements, creating large open-plan offices, a kitchen and dining area to seat 175 people, separate contractors’ offices, conference room, meeting rooms, staff break-out areas, toilets and shower facilities. The building was fitted out with access ramps and steps, fire alarm systems and emergency lighting, data points, network cabling and furniture.
To enhance the building’s sustainable credentials, Portakabin fitted carpet tiles made from recycled car tyres, windows with solar films, smaller cisterns and waterless urinals in the toilets.
Richard continues: “The opportunity to reuse an existing high-quality building was the ideal solution for us, rather than having to commit to a new build – fitting perfectly with our ‘ Closer to Nature’ ambitions. Portakabin worked well within our time requirements and were flexible in the face of delays in site preparation. The Portakabin project management and installation teams were all a pleasure to work with.”
At full capacity the building will accommodate around 175 Arla Foods personnel and up to 700 construction and engineering contractors.
