  1. The requirements

Babcock Marine is assembling the UK’s new Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers at its facility in Rosyth. The new carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales are being built in large individual blocks at six shipyards throughout the UK, then transported to Rosyth for final assembly and integration.

For this large, complex project, Babcock identified a need for high-quality office accommodation to support the migration of 300 staff and strategic partners on the construction programme at Rosyth.

Modern, energy-efficient facilities were required with all the usual amenities, including conference rooms and IT server space. The buildings had to be completed within a specific time frame to meet key targets in the site development programme, working in a restricted environment, to stringent health and safety standards.

  2. The Solution

The team at Portakabin had knowledge and experience of the site, having previously completed a large glazed building project on site. They worked closely with Babcock to successfully construct two new Ultima buildings. The buildings have an excellent energy efficiency rating with B rated Energy Performance Certificate, thanks to the heat exchange system that redistributes warm air to cooler areas of the building. The buildings have full secure door access, IT data infrastructure and fire alarms.

Current building legislation requires that tests must be undertaken in all buildings to ensure compliance with standards for air tightness. Independent air tightness tests resulted in a figure of 3m3/hr per m2 at 50 pascals, which is three times more airtight than the target of 10m3/hr per m2 at 50 pascals that is set out in the Scottish Building Standards.

We knew that Portakabin would deliver a quality product but the team demonstrated a complete understanding of our special needs when it came to on site management.
