Portakabin achieves BIM Level 2 certification

07/11/2017

The UK’s leading modular building provider, Portakabin, has been officially recognised by BSI (British Standards Institution) for its capability to work to Building Information Modelling (BIM) Level 2 as a tier 1 designer/contractor in accordance with PAS1192-2.

Prevalent in architecture, engineering and manufacturing industries, BIM is a collaborative way of working through digital technology which provides more efficient methods to design, deliver and maintain constructions throughout their lifecycle.

As the UK’s leading modular building provider, Portakabin dedicates itself to its expert teams and their continuous development to provide the best service and products.

The Government Construction Strategy, published in 2011, outlined the target of reducing the cost and carbon burden of public sector construction by up to 20%. To achieve this, BIM Level 2 is required on all centrally procured public sector projects; including those in the healthcare and education sectors.

Paul Scaife, BIM Manager at Portakabin notes: “Portakabin has been working to BIM Level 2 standard on projects for a number of years; tier 1 verification confirms our capability to engage on BIM Level 2 enabled projects at the capital delivery phase. This includes design and construction through to the asset handover.”

Building on the Government’s guidance, Portakabin has subsequently developed digital policies and protocols in line with the BIM mandate’s generic requirements for collaborative 3D modelling and related information management processes.

Steve Newell, Director at Portakabin, said: “The benefits of BIM are generally very well known, other key advantages of working at BIM Level 2 mean that we are operationally more efficient and can develop schemes that are also optimised for safety during the design and construction phases prior to handing over a building.

“BIM level 2 also promotes cost and programme certainties whilst delivering reduction in waste via lean design and construction processes and we are delighted to be in a position to pass these benefits on to our customers.’’

Andy Butterfield, Director of Built Environment Product Certification at BSI, said: “By achieving verification certification, Portakabin have demonstrated that they have the systems, processes and personnel to deliver compliance with PAS 1192-2 covering Design and Construction for BIM Level 2. The team should be very proud of this achievement and will benefit from improved collaboration across the supply chain.”
