As new housing developments increase the pupil population in the centre of Poole, Old Town First School needed to extend its facilities to double its intake. With building work not due for completion until summer 2008, Borough of Poole needed to very quickly source a temporary building for the school’s nursery class, until their new accommodation was ready.Solution :
Due to the urgency of the requirement, Borough of Poole needed a speedy tendering solution, and so submitted an invitation to tender through OGCbuying.solutions. As an executive agency of the Government and a leading national buying agency for the public sector, OGCbuying.solutions has a database of accredited suppliers that have been rigorously assessed for quality and value for money.
Borough of Poole Senior Education Officer, Nicola Keynes, says: “We use OGCbuying.solutions because we find it easier and quicker than our usual tendering processes. Accredited building supplier Portakabin emerged as the only company able to meet the school’s exact requirements.”
The school worked closely with the building project architect to determine the precise specifications of its nursery classroom. Portakabin fulfilled all of these requirements by supplying a specially designed two-module Ultima building. Ultima is the most technically advanced modular building system on the market, offering bright, welcoming interiors and exceptional thermal efficiency for a comfortable environment all year round.
The building was configured to include a lobby, two toilets, a kitchen and a large, open-plan classroom space. Portakabin fitted the building with access ramps and steps for compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), as well as installing fire and intruder alarms for optimum security.
Despite the tight timescale of the project, Portakabin delivered the building on schedule during the summer holidays. It was sited and installed in just one day. The school was assured of such timely delivery by the unique Portakabin Customer Charter, which promises to deliver all buildings on time and on budget. Portakabin even promises that if it ever fails to meet this commitment it will provide a week’s free hire for every day it is late.*
Julia Furbey, Governor and Secretary at Old Town First School, says: “It is a really lovely building, which fits in well with our site. The children have settled in very quickly. The nursery teacher and parents have been impressed, and we are all very happy with the new classroom.
“The service from Portakabin has been very good. They always keep us well informed and they respond quickly whenever we have a query or request.”
