The 100 year-old buildings that form the Ashford campus of Brooklands College required a major programme of refurbishment and extension. While the building work was underway, an entire interim college needed to be provided for the students. The scale of the building work meant that the interim college would need to be in place for at least two years, so quality was of paramount importance.Solution :
Craig Stewart, Portakabin London West Regional Manager, says: “Because of the two-year build programme, many students’ only experience of Brooklands College would be in the interim building. That meant the college was very keen to source the highest quality facilities, in order to maintain their high standards of education and provide the most stimulating and inspiring environment possible for their students. The college was impressed by the looks and build quality of our premium Ultima Vision buildings, and we were the only modular building supplier able to handle the scope and scale of this project within the anticipated timescales.”
Ultima Vision buildings feature floor-to-ceiling double-glazed wall panels to maximise natural light inside the building. The modules offer exemplary levels of thermal efficiency, spacious column-free interiors and full compliance with all Building Regulations.
Portakabin worked closely with the college to devise a 3,000mē building that fulfilled all of their requirements. The two-storey interim college was designed with buildings arranged in a U-shape around three sides of a large outdoor wooden decking area. Portakabin designed a huge canopy to shelter this central courtyard, creating a useful outdoor space for year-round use.
The building itself incorporates 12 large classrooms, seven IT rooms, a spacious common room, offices and meeting rooms, as well as toilets, a registry, four stairways and a lift. A bridge at first floor level also spans the courtyard, enhancing disabled access around the second storey.
Craig continues: “Another reason the college chose Portakabin to supply this building was our ability to offer a complete one-stop shop. The project really showcases the breadth of our expertise and the range of services we can provide.”
Portakabin completed all groundworks for the building, as well as all external decking, block paving, hard landscaping and the unique canopy. The building was connected to all services and extensively fitted out with data communications cabling and sockets. A climate-control system creates a comfortable environment all year round, while intruder and fire alarms provide enhanced security. The college even hired much of the furniture required for the building from Portakabin, including desk, chairs and cupboards.
Craig adds: “The completed building looks stunning. It’s bright and airy inside thanks to the large glazed walls, and provides an exceptional learning environment for the college’s students.”
