Tara Kirkwood - Manager Hire Division London North, Portakabin

For Tara Kirkwood, the role of Manager for London North's Hire Division of Portakabin, is a rewarding one. Although not originally planning a career in modular building hire, Tara thrives on the day-to-day situations her job offers.

"I am now responsible for six other people in this office as well as another branch and this makes the roles I fulfil very varied. From people management, project negotiation and customer liaison through to financial management, I find that adaptability is the key attribute required."

Initially more of a 'doer' than someone who studied, Tara says that she had no defined plans for her future. Now though, she says she is delighted with her current position and looking forward to continuing to grow her career with the Portakabin Group.

"I was taking the sales route before Portakabin, with jobs in travel, real estate and advertising. But ultimately, I found I wasn't satisfied with the single focus that sales presents and wanted more - though at the time, I wasn't sure what ‘more' would lead me to."

When Tara applied for the position with Portakabin, she felt her communication skills were her strong point.

"An ability to deal well with people was a skill I knew I had and something I thought could be transferable to any position. Communication is now vital to my job and I have finally found a role that truly suits me."

As to the future, Tara says that her progression through to management has been made all the easier with the assistance of colleagues as well as advisors from the personnel department at Portakabin and that with their continued support, she sees only positive things to come.

"Because the job is adapting and growing with me, I don't need to keep evaluating the future. I just know that my skills fit the roles I have taken and that I have the support and backing from the company, that will take me forward."
