When thieves stole copper pipework from a roof-mounted hot-water system during the school holidays, water leaked continuously into the school’s main classroom block for three days before it was discovered.
The damage was so extensive that four maths classrooms were rendered unfit for use for the start of the summer term, in the crucial run-up to exams. The school needed to find replacement classrooms urgently.
Amanda Allott, Business Manager at the school, says: “Once the damage had been assessed by the loss adjuster, we requested quotes from several modular building suppliers. We finally chose Portakabin because its buildings fulfilled our quality criteria, and offered a two-storey solution that meant we didn’t have to give up too much valuable playground space.
“Portakabin was also very quick to respond and provide quotes. Following my initial call they were here the next day to assess our needs and survey the site.”
The solution chosen comprised two double classroom blocks, positioned in a two-storey configuration with adjoining stair pod. The robust, energy-efficient building provides four 64m2 classrooms, alongside cloakrooms and store rooms. The classrooms were fitted out by Portakabin with a wifi data network and interactive whiteboards.
Once costs had been approved by the school’s insurers, the order was placed and Portakabin quickly began work on the groundworks and service connections.
The buildings were delivered to site in a single day, and installed and fitted out over a three-day period. The complete new building was handed over to the school less than two weeks from the date of order.
Amanda adds: “The service from Portakabin was extremely responsive and thorough, right from the start. They were clearly very experienced at working on live school sites. Their risk assessments, plans and safety procedures, which they shared with us, were comprehensive and very effective. When pupils were in school, any deliveries were guided safely through the site. I was very happy with the way the whole project was managed.”
“The pupils have quickly settled into their new classrooms. It was vital that we caused them as little disruption as possible, since many were preparing for final exams. The speed of response from Portakabin helped us to achieve this. The buildings themselves look very smart and are a real asset to the campus.”
