Event construction specialists NUSSLI needed to source a modular building to provide office and work space for the host broadcaster, SVGTV, at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.Solution :
Robin Hally, Senior Project Manager at NUSSLI, says: “We wanted to exceed the client’s expectations and we wanted an active partner who would become an integral part of the project team. Portakabin fulfilled all of these criteria and was keen to work with us to adapt its modular building designs to the client’s specific demands.”
The building needed to accommodate a control room, server rooms, briefing area, offices, canteen and hospitality space. Portakabin used its Ultima building system to provide the 2,000m2 of floor space required. Connected to this building were four 54m2 Titan buildings, a Solus building and three Portaloo washroom buildings.
The project posed many challenges, including strict regulations on working at height, the need to provide enclosed corridors between buildings and a basement area under the server racks to accommodate extensive cabling.
Portakabin overcame these challenges by working collaboratively with NUSSLI and sub-contractors. It developed a scissor lift technique to meet the work at height requirements, and worked with NUSSLI to design structural supports for the external corridor roofs. It used NUSSLI’s concept to develop a water-tight cable basement that could be incorporated into the modular building design.
The 62 modules were installed over two weeks on Jackpad® foundations, to avoid damaging the ground surface. The entire project was completed in six weeks.
Robin adds: “The client was so delighted with the high standard of the Portakabin modules that they decided to replace their original open-tent cafe design with modular Portakabin units featuring a fully glazed façade.”
SVGTV went on to order more than 80 stand-alone Portakabin buildings for the various venues around Glasgow.
“We were extremely happy with the collaborative attitude and the positive helpful approach that Portakabin showed on this project. The service and technical engineering support we received was exceptional. The Portakabin team were a pleasure to work with and responded in a very proactive way to overcome all challenges and deliver a successful project.” Robin Hally, Senior Project Manager, NUSSLI (UK) Ltd
