Kier Construction provides a comprehensive building and construction service delivered through a nationwide network of locally managed businesses complimented by a major projects capability.
The company was awarded a contract to build a £4 million purpose built secondary school for 60 pupils in South Lanarkshire with social, emotional and behavioural needs (SEBN).
The project required Kier Construction to demolish and replace two 40 year old buildings and relocate an existing three-storey Portakabin building as part of the new campus.
Because the Portakabin building would be moved to a new site once works had been completed, the top two floors would have to be stored off site to allow work to progress.Solution :
John Gilchrist, Project Manager, Kier Construction, said: “This was a complex project due to the logistics of removing a three-storey building and then relocating it a few weeks later to another site. It was important to us to work with an organisation with large resources to support the new structural designs and develop a first class solution.
“Portakabin worked closely with our design team to ensure that the building would conform to the current building regulations, identifying what work was required and how it would be undertaken.
“Once back on site, we refurbished and re-clad the Portakabin building so that it continues to provide a first class environment that has been tailor made to meet the school’s needs. By re-using the original building we were able to shorten the timescale for entry by six months and save on traditional construction.”
The team at Portakabin ensured that the original three-storey building was stored, relocated and rebuilt without disruption to the project.
