When a major fire destroyed a third of the buildings at Light Hall School in Solihull, the priority was to get classes up and running as quickly as possible to minimise disruption to the school’s 1,200 pupils. A large part of the school would need to be rebuilt, so extensive, high-quality temporary accommodation was required.Solution :
As an approved supplier to the local authority’s insurer, Zurich Municipal, Portakabin was immediately called in. Portakabin Hire Centre specialists were on site the day after the fire and quickly set to work assessing the school’s urgent needs.
Portakabin specified six of its bright and spacious double classroom buildings with integral cloakrooms for the displaced Geography and Languages departments, as well as a versatile Duplex modular building for use as a Drama studio. Another large Duplex building provided accommodation for two staff rooms and several offices. Separate accommodation was provided for the dining room and kitchen facilities, while four Portaloo toilet blocks provided essential high-quality amenities.
Light Hall School Business Manager, Corrine White, says: “Portakabin quickly got to grips with what we needed and delivered all the buildings to us on schedule, in a very short timeframe. In fact, all pupils from all year groups were back at school in normal lessons just four weeks after the fire.”
Such timely deliveries are all part of the exceptional service offered by Portakabin. The company has a unique Customer Charter that promises to deliver all buildings on time and on budget. For complete peace of mind, if Portakabin ever fails to meet this commitment, it promises to provide a week’s free hire for every day it is late or an additional 12 months’ warranty on buildings that are purchased.*
Corrine continues: “Portakabin took care of everything for us, from groundworks and building installation to ICT connections and pathways for easy access to the buildings. It meant we had just one point of contact for the whole project, which greatly simplified things. All in all, the project ran very smoothly.”
As construction work progressed to rebuild the main school buildings, it became clear that the existing Maths and Music block would need to be demolished. The school came straight back to Portakabin for the additional interim buildings it required. Portakabin supplied five further double classroom buildings for Maths and a large stand-alone Music room.
Corrine adds: “We have been more than happy with the quality of buildings provided by Portakabin. In many cases they are better than the old classrooms they replace. Our teachers and students have settled in to them very well. We are hiring the Portakabin buildings for as long as we need them, until the new building is completed, which is likely be around two and a half years.”
