The prestigious independent Manchester High School for Girls is carrying out refurbishment work in the prep school and building a new sixth-form building. This meant that an interim sixth-form block was required for up to three years, and a junior school classroom and toilets were needed for a single term. The quality of these buildings was vitally important, and aesthetics were a primary consideration for the sixth-form building, as it would occupy a prominent position on site.Solution :
For its sixth-form block, the school chose an Ultima Vision modular building because of its striking visual appeal, with full-height glazed walls along one elevation. A spacious single classroom building was chosen for the junior school, along with two Portaloo Junior toilet buildings, specially designed for primary school pupils, with low-level sinks, toilets and partitions.
Portakabin collaborated with the school to develop the specification for these buildings. The 187m2 sixth-form block incorporates three classrooms and a storage room, connected by a corridor that runs the length of the building with full-height windows on one side. The junior school classroom and toilets are connected by a covered walkway to the main building. Portakabin provided full air-conditioning and alarm systems, emergency lighting, furniture and datacommunications cabling, as well as installing all groundworks and extra-wide access ramps to meet Manchester City Council specifications.
Brad continues: “The project management from Portakabin was brilliant. They set out a detailed programme to meet our deadline, and delivered to the day. They responded positively to any changes we made to our specifications, and their suggestions for efficiencies even helped us to save money on the project. The buildings were delivered extremely carefully during term time, with very little disruption to the school.”
“The new sixth-form building looks stunning and everybody is extremely impressed with it. The students and staff love the new classrooms so much that I’m going to have problems moving them out. The junior school teacher is very pleased with her new Portakabin classroom, which is a third larger than the one she moved out of. Everything Portakabin did was absolutely on the button – we could not be more delighted.”
