Monklands Hospital in Airdrie needed to relocate staff from an existing office building and, at the same time, wanted to streamline its diabetes and podiatry services by moving them to a central facility. NHS Lanarkshire decided that a brand new building should be procured to fulfil both of these requirements.Solution :
Due to ongoing redevelopment plans at the hospital, the new building needed to be flexible enough to be relocated or extended in future, if necessary. That meant a modular building was the obvious choice.
George Reid, Capital Services Manager at NHS Lanarkshire, says: “We had worked with Portakabin previously on a successful project, so we knew they were capable of delivering the quality of building we required. Our architect had come up with an approved design and Portakabin worked closely with us to achieve this plan using its building modules.”
Premium-quality, energy-efficient Portakabin Ultima modules were specified for this new hospital facility. As with all healthcare buildings, the new facility had to meet very strict Scottish Health Technical Notes (SHTN) and comply with all relevant Codes of Practice.
The building features a reception, waiting rooms, consulting, interview and treatment rooms, toilets facilities, offices and store rooms. The building encloses a central courtyard so that every room receives natural light and natural ventilation. Portakabin fitted it out with all data cabling, alarm systems, emergency lighting and heating systems. Externally, the building is crowned with a feature crank-top fascia and has an attractive canopy over the main entrance.
George adds: “We specified that the building should be able to accommodate a second storey at a later date, without disrupting services to patients, and Portakabin were able to design it to meet this specification. It means that not only can the building be relocated if necessary, it can also be expanded – giving us a completely flexible solution.”
Timescales were very tight on this project and, after just 16 weeks on site, Portakabin handed over the building on the agreed date. Portakabin has a unique Customer Charter which promises that all buildings will be delivered on time and on budget. Portakabin even promises that if it ever fails to meet this commitment it will provide an additional 12 months’ product warranty, free of charge.*
George continues: “Portakabin were very good at accommodating any changes requested by us during the project. The construction phase went very smoothly, with Portakabin adhering to its own strict method statement and risk assessment. It meant that this large new building was installed with minimum disruption to the hospital’s services. Another advantage of the Portakabin solution was that the building was ready for use as soon as it was completed, with no delays for further commissioning.”
David Browning, General Manager of Property and Support Services at NHS Lanarkshire, says: “We are very happy with our new podiatry and diabetes building and we’ve had good feedback from the staff working there. Portakabin delivered a professional and responsive service to provide us with a quality building that meets our needs.”
