The award of specialist Business and Enterprise College status at North Chadderton School saw the introduction of a wider range of vocational courses. At the same time, the school was introducing more widespread ability setting across the curriculum, which resulted in a larger number of classes. These factors, combined with the complications of a split site, meant that the school found itself without sufficient high-quality accommodation to deliver the curriculum it desired.Solution :
The school’s Business Manager Gillian Hindle approached every modular building supplier in the UK to assess the standard of buildings available for rapid delivery.
Gillian says: “Portakabin came highly recommended, and when we viewed its products, it was clear that their reputation as the premier quality modular buildings was well deserved. We required a two-storey structure, and Portakabin buildings stood out from the competition as the best quality, most durable and permanent-feeling solution available.”
The school gave Portakabin a very clear set of requirements from which the Company drew up initial building plans. These were refined and tailored in collaboration with the school to create precisely the facilities they required.
Portakabin installed a two-storey Ultima building, consisting of nine classrooms. There are five classrooms upstairs and four on the ground floor, as well as three offices, a store room and two high-quality toilet units supplied by Portaloo. There is a DDA-compliant access ramp to the main door, making the ground floor fully wheelchair accessible.
All Portakabin buildings are backed by a unique 5-year product warranty and 20-year structural warranty. The school’s buildings were all delivered on the agreed date, in line with the Portakabin Customer Charter promise to deliver all buildings on time and on budget. The Charter even promises that if Portakabin ever fails to meet this commitment it will provide an additional six months’ product warranty, free of charge.*
The buildings were delivered and installed on pre-prepared groundworks in a single day during the summer term. During this rapid installation and subsequent fit-out, lessons were able to continue uninterrupted in school. All classrooms were equipped with interactive whiteboards and projectors, and one classroom was converted into an IT suite.
Gillian says: “All the staff are delighted with the new buildings and the pupils have settled in very well. The classrooms are a really good size and the quality of the finish throughout the building is lovely".
“I was impressed by the service from Portakabin. As well as being very responsive and helpful, the team really understood the specific needs of a school and the complexities of working on a school site, which was really important to us.”
