When the first Portaloo toilet unit left the factory back in 1965, no-one realised then just how successful this product would be and that Portaloo would become a household name.

Quality portable toilets from day one

The first Portaloo portable toilet units were launched in response to new Construction Health & Welfare regulations, which required on-site sanitary facilities for building workers. As the name suggests ('porta' + ‘loo'), the toilets were designed to be portable, enabling them to be moved from site to site. The portable toilet units provided construction companies with easy-to-connect, flushing WC and hand-washing facilities with hot water.

Building the Portaloo brand
It didn't take long for other industries to see the benefits of the Portaloo toilet unit and soon they were being used in schools, on the railways, by Local Authorities and in the leisure industry. Throughout the 1970s, the Portaloo business continued to grow, with the development of changing rooms and portable showers, as well as larger walk-in units for public use. All Portaloo units also began to be constructed entirely from steel to offer superior durability.

Advance into hire

It was during the 1980s that a fleet of Portaloo toilets and portable showers was first developed for hire. This meant that customers could benefit from quality Portaloo facilities for as long as they needed them.
