Clive Austin, Project Lead Manager at the hospital, says: “We went out to a number of suppliers, and Portakabin was the first to guarantee a handover date within our timescales. We knew about the company’s track record and we knew its buildings met the standards we required. Its GPS accreditation enabled us to fast-track the order.”
A partnership approach was essential to ensure that the unmoveable deadline was met. Portakabin and the hospital worked together on the design for the new ward, and the final drawings were approved overnight so Portakabin could get straight to work.
The gradient of the site required extensive groundworks, including five-foot foundation pads, which Portakabin completed within a week of receiving the order.
Portakabin handled every aspect of the build, giving the hospital a single point of contact for the entire project. This included all site works, installing climate-control systems, data networks, fire alarms, nurse-call systems, bed-head trunking, medical gas pipework, automated doors, video-entry systems, furnishings and even a link bridge to connect the new ward to the main hospital.
The 747m2 building incorporates a mix of four-bed and single bed en-suite wards, a large reception area and nurses’ station, shower rooms, kitchen, utility rooms, quiet room, stores and all associated facilities.
Clive adds: “Portakabin worked with us round the clock to meet the deadline. Incredibly, this fully serviced facility was completed in just ten weeks. Portakabin even handed it over three days ahead of schedule – which was a remarkable achievement given the time constraints and the scale of the building.”
“The new building is tremendous and everyone is delighted with it. It meets all permanent building standards and complies with all NHS regulations, which means it will serve us well for as long as we need it. The staff are very happy working in this wonderful new facility.”
