Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council needed to provide additional classroom space at three primary schools in the region as a result of rising demand for places. Once the final place allocations had been agreed for Maesybryn, Llantrisant and Tonyrefail primary schools in May, it emerged that all three would need to extend their capacity to cater for growing pupil numbers. The Council quickly needed to find a way to provide the necessary extra facilities before the start of the new term in September.Solution :
While the Council needed to find a suitable supplier very quickly, sourcing the highest-quality buildings was also a top priority. Choosing a Government Procurement Service approved supplier would allow single-source purchasing, significantly speeding up the procurement time while delivering assured-quality products and value for money.
Phil Watts, Senior Education Surveyor at Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, says: “We had worked with Portakabin in the past and, as a Government Procurement Service approved supplier, they were our first point of contact. We found that their high-quality buildings were able to meet all our requirements for full Building Regulations compliance, particularly in relation to the thermal efficiency stipulations of Part L, which was essential for us. The combination of quality buildings and rapid delivery capabilities meant Portakabin was our first choice.”
Portakabin could accommodate the Council’s brief to provide single classroom buildings with integral toilet facilities for Maesybryn and Llantrisant schools, and a double classroom unit with toilets to meet the needs of Tonyrefail Primary School. The classrooms were fitted with heating and cooling systems, which create a comfortable interior environment all year round.
Timely installation of these buildings was essential to ensure that the schools could provide sufficient high-quality teaching and learning space for all the children arriving at the start of the new term. Portakabin pulled out all the stops to complete all three projects on time, in line with its Customer Charter promise.
The unique Portakabin Customer Charter promises that all projects will be completed on time and on budget. The Charter even promises that, in the unlikely event of a project being delivered late, the customer will be entitled to an additional 12 months product warranty on their building.*
Phil Watts adds: “We are very pleased with the three new buildings Portakabin has provided, which are finished to a high standard. The heating and cooling system, combined with excellent thermal insulation, creates a really nice, warm, comfortable environment for the teachers and pupils. Feedback from the schools has been positive and we are delighted that, thanks to Portakabin, we were able to overcome our capacity constraints in such a short space of time.”
