St Teilo's High School

St Teilo’s High School is a large and very popular 11-18 school, serving 1,200 students in the east of Cardiff. Keen to extend the choice of subjects available to its GCSE students, the school decided to add Media Studies to the curriculum. With no spare classrooms available in the school’s existing buildings, new accommodation was required for a site where space was already at a premium.

Headteacher Timothy Pratt, says: “We were aware of the buildings available from Portakabin and the company’s reputation in the education sector, so we contacted them to see what they could provide. A representative came to the school to assess the site and advise us on the best solution for our needs and the limitations of our site.”

The building recommended by Portakabin was its specially designed double-classroom building, which incorporates two very spacious 64m² classrooms and a central cloakroom area. With excellent ventilation and large windows providing plenty of natural light, it offers a bright, welcoming and comfortable environment for teaching and learning.

The building for St Teilo’s High School was expertly delivered onto the restricted site by the Portakabin installation team. The installation was completed on the agreed date during the summer holidays, so that the building was ready for students returning to school in September. Portakabin also provided a robust, DDA-compliant ramp to ensure easy access to the building for everyone.

The new double-classroom building at St Teilo’s is being used to teach Religious Education. The RE department moved out of the main building to make way for the new Media Studies teaching area. Because the new Portakabin double classroom is a permanent-quality building, with BBA certification to confirm its compliance with all Building Regulations and Building Standards, the school intends to keep it on site for the foreseeable future.

Timothy Pratt continues: “We are very happy with the quality of the building, which has exceeded most people’s expectations and provides an excellent teaching environment. Staff are delighted with their new building and students have taken to it very well. In fact, staff who were initially not very impressed with the idea of teaching in temporary accommodation would now be very unhappy if we asked them to move.”
