The Estates and Facilities department at the University of Glamorgan identified a need for a dedicated Students’ Union building to complement the facilities in its recently completed £37-million Atrium building. A rise in student intake meant the existing recreational and social facilities were insufficient for the expanding student population.Solution :
The need to get new facilities in place before the start of the new academic year meant that traditional construction methods were out of the question. Off-site modular construction was identified as the best solution and the Estates team set about investigating potential suppliers.
Peter Aleman, Project Manager in the university’s Estates and Facilities department, says: “Portakabin was selected as our preferred supplier because it could meet our tight timescales and because of the quality of the materials used in its buildings. It was the only supplier to use pre-stressed one-piece steel external walls on its buildings and to offer a range of external finishes to complement our existing campus architecture.”
The space available on the site earmarked for the new facility was restricted by an adjacent railway line and existing buildings. The Estates department and Students’ Union presented Portakabin with a preferred layout for the new facility within this space, which Portakabin adapted to fit its modular building system. The final agreed design was a single-storey building constructed from Portakabin Ultima modules, offering high-quality finishes and exceptional thermal efficiency. It incorporates a large open-plan bar and coffee-shop area, a cellar, kitchen and catering facilities, offices, toilets and a shop.
Portakabin provided everything needed for the complete building solution, including fire and intruder alarms, a full air-conditioning system and all finishing touches, meaning that the university had just one supplier to deal with.
Peter adds: “The contract control and management from Portakabin was fantastic. They bent over backwards to meet our needs and were always willing to adapt to our last-minute alterations. The buildings were delivered and completed right on schedule and all minor snagging was completed before the installation team left the site.
“Transport of the modules to site was quite tricky and involved some road closures, all of which Portakabin organised and executed without any hitches on our behalf. I have nothing but praise for the service provided by Portakabin.”
Portakabin has a unique Customer Charter, which assures all customers that their buildings will be delivered on time and on budget. Portakabin even promises that if it ever fails to meet this commitment it will provide an additional 12 months product warranty, free of charge.*
Matt Higgins, Vice President, Campus Development at the university, says: “The new building exceeds all our expectations. The quality of the finishes is superb and everyone has been genuinely impressed by the high standard of the building. It blends in perfectly with the existing Atrium building and even looks as if the two were designed and built at the same time. The new building is now fully fitted out ready for the arrival of the students who, I’m sure, will be delighted with their excellent new facility.”
