UWC Atlantic College is a residential school providing an International Baccalaureate education for 16-18 year-old students from 80 different countries. When an electrical fire devastated one of the school’s boarding houses during term time, students were re-housed in other parts of the school. However, a complete new interim boarding house was required for the start of the new academic year, just three months later, until the fire-damaged building could be restored.Solution :
Nicholas Marten, Director of College Operations at Atlantic College, says: “We searched the market for a suitable building supplier and, after a tender process, chose Portakabin to provide the high-quality boarding accommodation we needed. We were very impressed by the highly professional and responsive approach taken by Portakabin, right from our very first meeting. It really gave us the confidence that they could deliver exactly what we required. Crucially, they offered guarantees that the building would be completed within our tight timescale, and we never doubted it.”
The college provided Portakabin with a plan of the fire-damaged building and asked the company to replicate these facilities in a modular building. The plans devised by Portakabin for a two-storey interim boarding house were quickly approved by the college and Portakabin set about fitting out and preparing the modules for delivery.
The 860m2 modular building incorporates 13 bedrooms to house up to 48 students, quiet study rooms, a common room and a staff bedsit, as well as storage and drying rooms. Linked to the building are premium-quality Portaloo toilet and shower facilities for the students. All carpets were supplied and fitted by Portakabin, along with access ramps and steps, emergency lighting and a fire alarm system, phone, IT and all service connections, plus plumbing, foundations and skirting.
Access to the college along narrow country lanes meant that Portakabin had to carefully plan the delivery route and liaise with the local council to have overhanging trees cut back, enabling the large modules to be transported safely to the site.
Nicholas continues: “True to their promise, Portakabin delivered the modules right on schedule. The installation went extremely well and Portakabin organised everything very efficiently so the building was completed and handed over on the agreed date. That gave us a full week to move in all the furniture, make up the beds and get everything ready for the students when they arrived at the start of term.
“The standard of accommodation provided by the new building is very high, the rooms are very spacious and the quality of the finishes is excellent. The students are delighted too, as many of the rooms have sea views!”
The fully fitted building was handed over by Portakabin just eight weeks after the order was placed by the college. The unique Portakabin Customer Charter promises customers that every project will be completed on time and on budget. It also promises that if the company ever fails to deliver on time, it will provide a week’s free hire for every day it is late.*
Nicholas adds: “Completing such a large, high-quality building in such a short turnaround time was an impressive achievement. We were very pleased with the service provided by everyone at Portakabin, from or initial planning meetings through to the installation and fitting out. The Portakabin building will provide our students with a high standard of accommodation until we can reinstate the damaged building.”
