When Weatherford UK, a world-leading oil industry training company, installed a £1 million on-shore test rig at their site in Aberdeen, they needed to establish high-quality training facilities that could be positioned beside the rig.
†This meant that the building needed to be flexible enough to meet this requirement and cater for future expansion.
†Over the past five years, Weatherford’s rapid expansion programme has seen a huge increase in manpower. Chris Ball, Training Centre Manager at Weatherford explains: “In 2001 we had 971 students through the door. In 2005 there were 7000! So, we needed a flexible building system that could meet our changing needs and one that could be delivered and installed very quickly.”Solution :
As no other building method could match their need for speed and flexibility, Weatherford turned to Portakabin. A modular solution from Portakabin means that additional floors and extensions can be added or buildings reduced and reconfigured quickly and simply with little or no disruption.
Three extensions in seven years!
This flexibility has been crucial for Weatherford, as the company has extended its original training centre three times in the past seven years. The original building was a single Duplex module classroom purchased from Portakabin in 1999. In the same year, three other Duplex modules were added.
In 2001, due to huge expansion, more space was required. Weatherford turned to Portakabin again to increase the building to a two-story facility, consisting of twelve on twelve double storey Duplex modules. This provides a floor area of approximately 900 square meters, including an internal stairpod.
Portakabin also offers a range of solutions for hire. With no minimum hire period, Weatherford could enjoy maintenance-free buildings and the freedom to expand, reduce and relocate as their needs change. In addition, hiring from Portakabin means easy monthly repayments – with no tied-up capital.
Weatherford’s third and latest expansion includes the hire of two Portakabin Titan buildings to create a spacious, open-plan office. This means that Weatherford can now accommodate all their students under one roof. The new buildings replace two, separate older cabins that were situated across the road from the training centre.
Chris explains: “The flexibility of the buildings allows all our internal needs to be taken care of. Two large concertina partitions give the ability to open up the classrooms to increase space. This means we can house small groups in individual rooms or we can move the walls back to create an open-plan interior that holds up to 90 students.”
The latest expansion increases the building to just under 1000 square meters. Chris says: “From inside the facility you would never know that you are working in anything other than a traditional building… And during expansion all electrics, networks and cabling are taken care of without any of the hassle you would encounter in a concrete building!”
Chris has been equally impressed with the service he has received from Portakabin. Each stage of development has been supported by the Portakabin Customer Charter, which promises to deliver buildings on time and on budget. If a building is ever delayed, the company offers a week’s free hire for every day it is late.
This peace of mind promise has proved invaluable to Weatherford.Chris concludes: “We are very happy with the products and the service we have received, particularly from the local Hire Centre at Aberdeen. Their response has always been excellent… Portakabin has always done exactly what we have requested; supplying and installing exactly what we require, on time and on budget to very high standards.”
