Modular Buildings: Babcock Marine Case Study

Organisation : Babcock Marine

Application : Offices

Product : Ultima

Location : Rosyth

Requirement :

Babcock is assembling the UK’s new Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers at its facility in Rosyth. The new carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales are being built in large individual blocks at six shipyards throughout the UK. They are then transported to Babcock’s Rosyth facility for final assembly and integration.

Babcock required two buildings to provide modern office facilities at its Rosyth base for 300 staff and partners working on the project.

Solution :

Mark Porter, Project Manager, Babcock Marine, says: “The carrier project is large and complex and we identified a need to put in place high-quality office accommodation to support the migration of strategic partners on the construction programme.

“We wanted to create two high-quality, energy efficient office buildings that would provide a modern working environment with all the usual amenities, including conference rooms and IT server space. They had to be completed within a specific timeframe to meet key targets in our site development programme, working in a restricted environment and to the most stringent health and safety standards.”

The team at Portakabin had knowledge and experience of the site, having previously completed a large glazed building project on site. They worked closely with Babcock to successfully construct two new Ultima buildings. The buildings have an excellent energy efficiency rating with B rated Energy Performance Certificate, thanks to the heat exchange system that redistributes warm air to cooler areas of the building. The buildings have full secure door access, IT data infrastructure and fire alarms.

Current building legislation requires that tests must be undertaken in all buildings to ensure compliance with standards for air tightness. Independent air tightness tests resulted in a figure of 3 m3/hr per m2 at 50 pascals, which is three times more airtight than the target of 10 m3/hr per m2 at 50 pascals that is set out in the Scottish Building Standards.

Mark continues: “We knew that Portakabin would deliver a quality product but the team demonstrated a complete understanding of our special needs when it came to on site management and the commitment of the Portakabin team resulted in a very successful project. Their ability to work closely with us in a unique site environment resulted in the delivery of a quality product and our internal feedback has been very positive.”
