Having secured a five-year contract with the Highways Agency to maintain roads in the South East of England, the Balfour Beatty Mott MacDonald (BBMM) joint venture commenced a programme of refurbishing depots. Tight timescales determined the procurement route for the installation of a modular office and mess facility at Weatherhill. The existing facilities were outdated and not in line with the modern Highways business requirement for depot office accommodation. This, coupled with an immoveable year-end deadline which was fast approaching, meant BBMM had to get a high-quality building in place very quickly.

Solution :

Stephen French, Site Manager for BBMM, says: “We recognised that a modular style building was the only way we could get the facilities in place before our deadline. Portakabin explained very clearly what they were able to do and how they would complete the project. We briefed them on what we needed for the building and the limitations of the site, and Portakabin came back with a solution that fitted all of our needs.”

The building devised by Portakabin is constructed from premium-quality, energy-efficient Ultima building modules and incorporates office space, a canteen, changing rooms and toilets. The building is fully air conditioned and clad externally in wood plastic composite to give it a natural timber look that handles heat, cold and weathering.

Portakabin took charge of the entire project, providing a complete turn-key package. This included demolishing and removing the existing building on site, completing all groundworks and drainage preparations, as well as installing the building, connecting it to services and fitting it out.

Stephen continues: “We requested a number of bespoke adaptations to the building, which Portakabin was able to provide. These included plastering the interior walls and fitting timber cladding to the outside of the building. We see this new building as a long-term asset and wanted to ensure it enhanced the Weatherhill site and provided longevity and a high standard of accommodation for staff.”

As promised, the building was installed on schedule, despite adverse weather conditions, just eight weeks after the plans were finalised – comfortably meeting BBMM’s year-end deadline. In fact, Portakabin promises all customers that their buildings will be delivered on time and on budget, in its unique Customer Charter. This even promises that if Portakabin ever fails to meet its commitment, the company will provide an additional 12 months product warranty, free of charge.*
