Clark's Little Ark receive accessible facilities from Portakabin

The Glasgow based Portakabin team made a one off donation of accessible bathroom facilities for Sanquhar’s family-run animal shelter

The small piece of land at the former brickworks in Sanquhar evolved unintentionally into a home for farm animals that locals loved to visit. Soon the family-friendly shelter became popular with visitors far and wide, leaving owners Alison and Ian Shankly short on facilities. Joan McAlpine, local member of Scottish Parliament and advocate of Clark’s Little Ark, wrote to Portakabin asking for help.

Joan said, “The Ark was set up to meet the needs of Alison’s son Clark, who sadly passed away. After his passing, Alison continued to develop the sanctuary for other children in the area. In order to provide organised learning and volunteering opportunities for children, the Ark needed accessible toilet facilities.”

The team at Glasgow’s Hire and Visitor Centre were able to donate facilities to the shelter. Keith McIntyre, Glasgow Hire Centre Manager at Portakabin said: “We were really happy to donate this disabled toilet unit to Clark’s Little Ark. It had become surplus to our stock, so as a one off donation we were able to give it to a really deserving cause.”

The accessible toilet unit has 7m2 of space for visitors to use with ease. The Glasgow Portakabin team also provided a water tank with the unit as access to a main water supply was limited.

Alison Shankly, co-owner of Clark’s Little Ark said: “We’ve been so lucky receiving support from the local communities and beyond, to help make Clark’s Little Ark free and accessible to all ages and abilities. Our friends at Portakabin have made it even more accessible for those travelling long distances. We are indebted to our friends and extremely grateful for the support.”

Just one month after the unit was delivered, Portakabin were able to provide Clark’s Little Ark with a second facility in partnership with client Wincanton.

“We had a unit we no longer needed on our site so the Portakabin team asked if it could be donated to Clark’s Little Ark.” said David Mackay Distribution Centre Manager at Wincanton. “We loved the idea and agreed straight away; the shelter is a huge part of the community and we’re so happy to provide this help.”

Clark’s Little Ark is owned and run by Alison and Ian Shankly in memory of their son Clark. The shelter is completely free to attend, with the animals cared for by Alison, Ian, their faithful volunteers and The Friends of Clark’s Little Ark. For more information, visit clarkslittleark.com.

Portakabin provides a range of toilets, shower and changing facilities on an interim, permanent or event basis.
