Portakabin takes part in Big LEGO® Brick Hospital

Businesses are being offered the chance to be part of a unique fundraising appeal to build a model of the new Clatterbridge Cancer Centre - using more than half a million LEGO® Bricks.

Portakabin became the first corporate organisation to put their stamp on the project, after commissioning a replica of one of their structures.

Sue Lawton-Hayes, Area Hire Manager for Portakabin, said: “We are delighted to have been able to make a donation to commission the LEGO® Brick Portakabin building as part of the project. It’s a special cause close to many of our hearts.”

James Catlow, 20, from Preston, a patient at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, placed the Portakabin building in the site area of the model, currently on display outside the hospital in Wirral.

Other businesses are now being invited to be part of the project.

Jade Palmer, Corporate Partnerships Manager for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, said: “Our Big LEGO® Brick Hospital will be positioned at some of the busiest spots and tourist attractions across the region.

“This is a truly fabulous opportunity for businesses to not only help transform cancer care for future generations, but also increase their profile in sponsoring something fun and unique which will attract so much attention.

“Let your imagination run wild. Sponsor anything from a tree to a whole floor of the hospital or commission your own unique addition. We can even supply a kit with instructions for sponsors to build their own section.”

When complete the model will be one of the biggest Lego Brick structures of its kind in the UK.

Members of the public are being asked to buy a LEGO® brick for a £1 donation, culminating in a 1.6m x 2.8m x 1.6m high replica of the specialist hospital that is currently under construction in Liverpool city centre.

When complete it will contain more than 100 rooms replicating a hospital including 150 beds, kitchens and MRI scanners.  Each bed is made up of 49 bricks equaling a total of 7350 bricks just for the beds alone. There will also be 200 mini figures – such as nurses, doctors and construction workers - in the completed model.  It will be one of the biggest LEGO® structures in the UK and the first ever hospital of its kind to be made from LEGO® bricks.

Experts from Bright Bricks will oversee the project and train an army of local enthusiasts to work on the structure.

The model will be a replica of the new Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, currently under construction in Liverpool city centre and due to open in 2020. The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity is working to raise £15 million towards the cost of construction and improvements to the Wirral site.

The model will go on show at Exhibition Centre Liverpool over the August bank holiday weekend as part of The Great Brick Adventure.
