Portakabin delivers essential space on central London site for Mace Group

During the redevelopment of the London School of Economics and Political Science, construction leader Mace chose Portakabin to provide over 500m² of site accommodation to a busy campus, where a new public square will be created in the heart of London.

Portakabin, the UK’s market leader in modular construction, developed a highly functional welfare space for construction workers to a standard unsurpassed in the site accommodation market. The Portakabin team delivered 21 modules to the busy London-central site, installing all units in just three days.

The three-storey welfare building was installed onto a 7m high steel gantry and will give more than 550m² of space for site workers.

Facilities include; toilets and showers, security and first aid offices, a large drying room, two open plan offices with an 18-seat meeting room plus a kitchenette, a canteen and a PPE store room.

The exterior of the building also features a living wall on one elevation bringing a green eco-system to an urban construction site. Living walls can also help to supress dust and reduce noise pollution.

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) appointed Mace as design and build contractor to deliver its new state-of-the-art Centre Buildings Redevelopment (CBR). The £80m project, will be LSE’s largest ever redevelopment and will provide a world class teaching and learning environment for students and staff.

The CBR project will create 15,500m2 of space including two linked tower blocks; Houghton Tower, reaching six storeys high and Tower Building reaching 13-storeys. The buildings will provide expansive student social learning space, a large lecture theatre, student commons and a main stair atrium at ground floor level, while below, a single-storey basement will cover most of the building footprint.

External landscaping will create a new public square at the heart of the LSE giving direct access to the new building and the LSE Library.

David Griffiths, General Manager at Portakabin said, “With the Aldwych campus site sitting right in the heart of London, our modular units were able to be craned into the tightest of spaces. The building has been installed on a 7m high steel gantry to reduce the amount of space taken up on the busy construction site. The building our team delivered is a testament to how flexible our modular site accommodation products can be; providing the highest quality, for any site.”

Jonathan Partridge, Assistant Construction Manager at Mace said, “The specification of the building is excellent and the professional standard and expertise of the Portakabin team allowed the whole operation to be safely installed in three days. The project required high-quality welfare facilities with open plan offices for more than 250 operatives throughout the two year construction project. Everything was delivered with ease thanks to the Portakabin team’s proficiency.”
