Portakabin delivers largest ever single order for the purchase of self-contained, portable buildings

Contractor Bowmer and Kirkland specified 46 buildings to create an impressive site accommodation complex for its construction of the new £330 million Waterside Campus for the University of Northampton.

The Waterside development will transform a 58-acre brownfield site in the heart of the town, providing state-of-the-art academic facilities for 15,000 students as well as residential accommodation and community leisure amenities.

Bowmer and Kirkland purchased more than 1,300sqm of high quality site accommodation to add to its existing fleet of 350 Portakabin portable buildings. The 46 new buildings, each up to 10m long, will be used on site at Northampton for at least three years, before being relocated to provide office and welfare facilities for other Bowmer and Kirkland sites.

On the Northampton site, the individual self-contained buildings have been linked together over one and two storeys and configured as two wings with a central reception hub. This provides high quality project office accommodation, a canteen and welfare facilities for use by the Bowmer and Kirkland construction team, its consultants and subcontractors.

Kevin Powley, General Manager at Bowmer and Kirkland said, “We wanted to have an immaculate presence on site with this being such a prestigious and prominent project. We chose the buildings from Portakabin to reflect that – they are market leaders in the field. We worked closely with their team to develop our bespoke design specifications so the site accommodation complex suited our exact requirements.”

“Portakabin is a long-standing supplier of portable buildings to Bowmer and Kirkland and we trust their team to deliver superior quality buildings for every project. For us, purchasing our site accommodation is a highly cost-effective solution. The quality of these buildings is second-to-none and by using a single supplier we have no compatibility issues when we need to link the buildings together. The response times from Portakabin are also excellent.”

All the buildings have been finished in Bowmer and Kirkland’s corporate colours, with black windows and black fascia trims. Plumbing, electrics and flooring were pre-installed by Portakabin off site in York before delivery to site. For maximum flexibility, each portable building has entrance doors which can either be removed to create larger site complexes, or the doors can be retained to allow use as a single building.

Portakabin has supplied portable buildings to Bowmer and Kirkland for the past 15 years. Recent other projects have included the supply of 18 units to the Kingsway Business Park site in Rochdale.

Portakabin offers an extensive range of portable accommodation to buy or hire and in a choice of sizes up to 67m2. These self-contained buildings are manufactured and fitted out in the factory for rapid installation on site. The units are typically sited and ready for use within a day, minimising disruption. Specifications can suit any permanent or interim application – from offices, welfare facilities and classrooms to health centres, GP practices, marketing suites, canteens, laboratories and secure storage, as well as toilets, showers and changing rooms.

As on the Northampton project for Bowmer and Kirkland, Portakabin self-contained buildings can be linked horizontally or sited in multiple storeys to create space for as many people as required.
