Cards For Good Causes sells charity Christmas cards from stores across the UK in the run up to Christmas. In 2013, the space within Sheffield Cathedral normally used by the charity was unavailable due to extensive restoration works being carried out by specialist contractor, William Anelay. An alternative location for the shop had to be found urgently, so trading could begin in early October.Solution :
Mary Watson, Manager of Cards For Good Causes in Sheffield, says: “We had used a portable building many years ago, so it seemed like the ideal solution this time. The cathedral were happy to arrange planning permission for us and to find a suitable building.”
William Anelay was already hiring offices and welfare facilities for its site workers from Portakabin Site Accommodation. The company asked Portakabin Site Accommodation, on behalf of the cathedral, if it could provide a building suitable for the charity shop. In response, Portakabin Site Accommodation offered one of its top-of-the-range Konstructa Energy-Saver Plus buildings.
This 32-foot long, all-steel building is one of the most energy-efficient buildings of its type on the market. It is robust and secure, with an attractive white exterior. Enhanced insulation and double-glazed windows, along with convector heaters, create a comfortable, welcoming environment – perfect for staff and shoppers in the cold winter months.
Mary Watson says: “We were truly delighted with the building, which is surprisingly spacious inside. One major advantage of using this type of building instead of an area inside the cathedral is that we can simply lock the shop up securely at night, rather than having to pack everything away each evening.”
The building was located on a prominent, restricted-access area outside the cathedral, close to busy tram lines. To avoid congestion and disruption, Portakabin Site Accommodation delivered the building early in the morning and set it up ready for use.
Mary adds: “We’re very grateful to have such a super shop this year. It means we can continue raising much-needed funds for more than 40 charities via our card sales, even though our usual sales area is unavailable.”
“The volunteers who work in the shop are extremely happy with the new building. It’s much warmer and cosier than our usual location in the cathedral. Everything is self-contained, secure and easy to manage.”
