Garth Hill College in Bracknell is being rebuilt as part of the Government's Building Schools for the Future (BSF) initiative. An entire new three-storey, 13,000m² school complex for 1,500 students is being constructed on a site adjacent to the existing school. Mace Plus was appointed as main contractors for the £30m project, which, at its peak, will require more than 250 tradespeople to be working on site. Mace Plus needed to source high-quality, durable on-site office and welfare accommodation for the duration of the 73 week construction phase.Solution :
Nick Topham, Construction Manager for Mace Plus, says: "Portakabin Site Accommodation has become a preferred supplier in the Mace Plus supply chain, having performed well on previous projects. We were advised to use Portakabin Site Accommodation for the Garth Hill College project due to the quality of its buildings and its competitive rates."
Mace Plus hired a comprehensive suite of 22 Konstructa office and welfare buildings, which are linked and double-stacked on site. The upper floor comprises extensive offices, meeting rooms, toilets and kitchen facilities, split between Mace Plus staff and sub-contractors. On the ground floor, four cabins are used to provide a large canteen seating area, there is a large kitchen building and a first-aid room. The remaining five buildings are drying rooms, toilets and shower facilities. Mace Plus also hired a separate security cabin for the site.
Nick continues: "The first batch of 18 buildings were delivered in good time and were quickly erected in just two days. It meant they were up and running earlier than we expected. The coordination between Portakabin Site Accommodation and Mace Plus throughout the project was excellent. Portakabin Site Accommodation kept us well informed at all times and ensured we knew exactly when the buildings would be arriving. We were really impressed by the level of service provided."
The buildings will be on site for the entire 73 week construction project, after which the teachers and students will migrate into the new building. There will then follow a 50-week demolition project to remove the old school buildings. The Portakabin Site Accommodation cabins have been positioned so that some of the welfare units can be retained on site for the demolition project, meaning that they will be in constant use for almost two and a half years.
Such long projects demand robust and durable site accommodation to continuously provide good-quality facilities for site-based personnel. All Portakabin Site Accommodation buildings are specially designed to withstand the rigours of a building-site environment. The anti-vandal units are constructed entirely from steel, providing excellent levels of security, as well as comfortable, welcoming workplaces.
"The quality of the buildings was excellent. Half of them were brand new and the rest were in immaculate condition, very clean and well looked after. We needed extensive, high-quality accommodation for the 250-plus tradespeople who will be on site during the fitting out phase, and that's exactly what Portakabin Site Accommodation delivered."
