When the planned maintenance shutdown at Cottam Power Station was brought forward at short notice, Siemens Energy Services had just four weeks – rather than the usual five months – to get everything ready to service the plant. That meant sourcing all the manpower, resources and spare parts needed, as well as setting up a complete on-site office and welfare compound for site-based engineers and supervisors.Solution :
Siemens Energy Services has a preferred supplier agreement with site accommodation provider Portakabin Site Accommodation, awarded for the high quality of its site buildings and exceptional performance on previous projects. Siemens contacted Portakabin Site Accommodation, asking for ten buildings to be installed at the power station within two weeks.
Simon Higgs, Business Development Manager for Portakabin Site Accommodation, says: “As soon as Siemens requested the buildings, we set about getting them ready. By the time the order was placed, on a Friday, we had to get the buildings on site the following Monday. Thanks to our earlier preparation, everything was ready to be delivered and installed on schedule, ensuring we lived up to our on-time delivery promise .”
Stephen Perry, Site Services Supervisor at Siemens Energy Services, says: “All the site buildings we needed were set up in time for the start of the maintenance programme, which was quite an achievement given the tight turnaround. Once work started on site, it soon became clear that we needed extra office capacity, and Portakabin Site Accommodation responded immediately by installing two more buildings.”
Portakabin Site Accommodation provided ten 32-foot units initially, configured as a two-storey building due to limited space on site. The ground floor provided mess room accommodation, while the upper floor comprised three office units and two locker rooms. Two additional office units were added later, creating a separate two-storey building.
Stephen adds: “The Portakabin Site Accommodation team were very responsive and flexible throughout the contract, and were able to extend the hire period beyond the initial nine-week agreement when final commissioning took longer than planned.
“Everyone was pleased with the quality of the buildings, which were robust and spacious. The integral water boilers in the mess rooms were a useful extra feature, which we hadn’t come across before.”
