Teesside students join forces with modular design professionals

Twenty four second year Interior Architecture and Interior Design students are answering an eco-conscious brief from the UK’s leading modular construction specialists

Portakabin has asked Teesside students to design a sustainable, innovative and versatile space to support the module Design Project 3: External Projects on the BA (Hons) courses in Interior Architecture and Interior Design.

Interior Design students at Teesside University are working with Portakabin, the UK’s leading modular construction expert on an exciting new project.

Portakabin has asked the students to come up with ideas on how to build, design and power a 3m x 3m x 3m standalone pod, suitable for any outdoor space.

Daniel Harvey, Architectural Lead at Portakabin is literally asking the students to think outside the box, “We’re not just looking for a quick, fix solution to our brief”, explains Daniel. “We’re asking how the design of the pod can not only enhance the outdoor space but in turn; complement its surroundings. We want to challenge the students to think beyond the traditional walls of construction and consider how we can create versatile space together for a range of uses. The architecture and design of modular is incredibly tactile. We are looking forward to seeing how far these students can help us push the boundaries of it.”

Leanda French, senior lecturer in interiors at Teesside University, said: “It is a fantastic opportunity for our students to work with a design industry leader. The benefits of having a brief set by Portakabin are many fold, from being challenged to analyse possible scenarios for the pod, to dealing with the functionality of a restricted space.

“The students are thrilled to be working on a real world design problem and they are also having to think very carefully about how they pitch and communicate design ideas to professional architects and designers. At Teesside University we pride ourselves on our ability to work alongside employers to develop the skills of our students so that they are work-ready and projects such as this help us achieve this.”

Students have been given a deadline to submit and present their work by January 2018.
