  1. The Requirements

Worcestershire Royal Hospital wanted to reduce pressure on its Accident and Emergency (A&E) department by creating a new Surgical Clinical Decision Unit (SCDU) where A&E patients could be assessed fully before being transferred or discharged. The new unit was needed urgently, but the hospital had to ensure that any new building complied with strict NHS regulations and its own high standards.

  2. The Solution

Principal contractor, Lend Lease Project Management and Construction, appointed Portakabin to supply the specially equipped building. Kevin Gosney, Assistant Project Manager at Lend Lease, says: “The modular building system used for this project was specified largely because of its superior energy efficiency, with air tightness performance that significantly exceeds building regulations requirements.”

The new SCDU constructed by Portakabin provides 24 beds in two wards, as well as ancillary facilities including dirty and clean utilities, nurses’ base, consulting rooms and two en-suite isolation rooms. To provide the hospital with a complete, ready-to-use building, Portakabin fitted it out with a host of specialist equipment, including a nurse-call system, fire alarms, medical gas systems, bed-head trunking and access control. The SCDU is linked to the hospital’s main building and has full climate control and an air-change ventilation system. The interim building was completed in just four weeks – two weeks ahead of the programme deadline. It is expected to remain in use  for around five years, enabling the hospital to treat A&E patients more quickly and efficiently, and helping it to meet waiting time targets.

Kevin adds: “All the internal fitting out was completed by Portakabin which improved co-ordination and reduced the programme time. There was a great attitude from Portakabin at every stage, and a willingness to get the job done on time, within budget and defect free.”

The culture of the whole Portakabin team was second to none, nothing was a problem and the project was a great success.
